What is Maxillary Cyst?

Maxillary cysts or Maxillary Sinus Retention Cysts are rounded, dome-shaped, soft tissues developed from the mucosa within the maxillary sinus. The cyst can evolve without any symptoms and generally diagnosed by several imaging exams by professionals.

This cyst is supported by fibrous connective tissue and seemed to be filled by liquid, air, or solid content regardless of its origin.

The role of CT scan imaging is very important for these cases since it reveals the rare peripheral presentation of cysts.

Radicular Cyst

Radicular cysts are generally seen in the anterior region of the jaw caused due to trauma. The development rate of this cyst is low, and severity affects adjacent teeth and roots, causing more open to the bones.

Maxillary Residual Cyst

Maxillary Residual cyst is the retention of a radicular cyst that occurs due to improper removal of radicular or other inflammatory cysts or due to the presence of ruining remnants around the tissues of teeth.

A 36-year-old female patient Kanaga(name changed) reported to Jerush dental and facial corrective centre, Thuckalay, Tamilnadu, with a chief complaint of slowly progressing swelling with low pain on the maxillary right front region since 2 months duration.

According to the patient, the swelling was gradually increasing and there was no pus or bleeding discharge. The patient had a history of tooth extraction in the same area about 7 years ago following an accident with facial injuries.

The surgical removal of the cyst was carried out under local anesthesia and strict asepsis through an intraoral approach. The sectioned gross specimen disclosed yellowishly, solidified pus-like material covered by a thin-layered soft capsule. Now we are glad to hear that Kanaga is totally recovered.

Verrucous Carcinoma- Mouth cancer

What is Carcinoma?

Carcinoma is a cancer tissue developed from epithelial cells, whose genome has been damaged or deformed, causing cells to show malevolent properties. It grows in soft skin cells or the tissues which line the inner or outer surface of the human body such as the liver or kidneys.

Types of Carcinoma develop in mouth

1. Squamous cell carcinoma

It is a very common type of skin cancer, occurs in the mouth, and also found in the soft lining of certain organs of the human body, digestive tract, and respiratory tract. Carcinoma has been derived from the skin, sometimes seen on areas that are exposed to direct sunlight such as the face, ears, neck, lips, the backside of the hands, etc. About 90 percent of the oral carcinoma found in the mouth is Squamous cell carcinoma.

2. Minor salivary gland carcinoma

This is one of the many types of mouth cancers that develop on the salivary gland. Adenoid cystic carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma are a few of the other types.

3. Lymphoma

The tonsils in our mouth and base of the tongue are containing lymphoid tissue. Cancer that develops in the Lymph tissue is called Lymphoma

4. Benign oral cavity tumors

There are chances of developing plenty of types of noncancerous cancers in the oral cavity and oropharynx. Since these cancers have the possibility of developing into cancer, benign tumors are often surgically removed.

5. Lip Cancer

Squamous cell carcinoma and Basel cell carcinoma are the two types of carcinomas that generally develop and mostly affect men.

6. Mouth Cancer

This is a type of oral cancer that develops in any part of the mouth, including the lips, gums, or tongue.

7. Verrucous Carcinoma (VC)

It is a common type of squamous cell carcinoma and about 5 percent of carcinoma occurs in the mouth. This is usually found in people who have the habit of chewing tobacco or using snuff orally. Verrucous carcinoma is otherwise called ‘snuff dipper’s cancer.’ The victims of verrucous carcinoma have a good prognosis. The percentage of verrucous carcinoma varies from country to country and especially India ranks high.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and addressing of malaligned/malpositioned teeth and jaws as well as malaligned bite positions. Metal Braces

This is the traditional type and called as traditional or wire braces. This is the most economical way of wearing braces and the user will get the result at fairly fast. Contrary to the yesteryears’, modern wire braces are available in less noticeable colours and users can select their choice of colour rubber bands that go with the wire.

Ceramic Braces

These brackets are tooth coloured and have a similar texture like tooth. The wires are also available in less noticeable and tooth coloured. This system was once found very demanding since it is ideal for people who want to hide their wearing of braces though the price of these braces is high.

Lingual Braces

Self-Ligating Braces

Available in both metal and ceramic versions, these braces are commonly orthodontists are using for their candidates nowadays. Same as wire and ceramic braces self-ligating braces work with bracket and wire system. The only difference is, instead of brackets and rubber bands, this system uses brackets with clips or door that hold on the wire. Holding on to food remnants is less and comparatively less painful than other braces and thereby reduces the number of visits to their dentist, a patient has to make.

Invisalign

This is an expensive branded device and generally used invisible aligner, ‘braces’, has its own pros and cons. The best feature it has is the ability to totally remove the system to clean the teeth and braces when necessary. Composite Fillings

  • Dental adhesives are often used for bonding dentures in the mouth. This sometimes requires re-bonding after food. No such adhesives are needed for implant supported dentures.
  • Dentures demand ‘removal’ for cleaning, whereas except for removable denture, implant supported denture can be cleaned by brushing and flossing as like normal teeth
  • Your sense of taste is compromised as the roof of the mouth is covered by dentures. No such condition occurs in implant-supported restoration.
  • Dentures may slip out while speaking or eating, whereas implants are firmly anchored in the jaws and won’t get slipped.
  • With dentures, you need to eat with caution and sometimes you may limit eating more food since it has only 10% chewing power to that of natural teeth. Contrary to it, with implant restorations, one can eat with full chewing power.
  • Click sound while you hear during eating with dentures is no more with implant supported dentures.
  • Dentures have no effect on jaw bone needed to prevent bone loss, while implants ensure high-pressure stimulation that needed to prevent jawbone loss.
  • Bone loss progression caused overtime while wearing dentures can result in contributing ‘old look’ to the face. Implants prevent bone loss.

What is Endodontics

The treatment (Root Canal) of an infected tooth pulp has the following steps: 

  1.  An opening is made through the tooth towards the infected pulp area and the total pulp is removed
  2. The canal is well cleaned and medicated to ascertain the sterility, followed by placing a temporary filling.
  3. The sterile filling material is then filled into the canals and sealed to prevent the reentry of germs.
  4. After completion of the treatment, a capping is done with a permanent restorative crown or bonded filling that replaces the temporary filling.
